Meet Dr. Maughon

Richard Henry Maughon, MD, is a skilled interventional pain physician and an anesthesiologist providing compassionate pain management care at Southern Pain Specialists in Birmingham, Alabama. 

Dr. Maughon graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of South Alabama in Mobile and then earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, also in Mobile. He completed an internship in family practice at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science in Little Rock before returning to Alabama for his anesthesiology residency, which he completed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He continues to refine his skills and stay on the cutting-edge of developments in his field by taking continuing education courses and workshops in areas such as spinal cord stimulators (SCS), dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation, and pain theory and technique.

In his professional career, Dr. Maughon has experience in many different roles. He’s personally delivered pain management and anesthesia care at several practices and hospitals, served as a medical director at a pain management clinic, and educated the next generation of doctors as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an adjunct faculty member at Missouri State University in Springfield. He also established the interventional pain medicine program at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.

Dr. Maughon is certified by the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians and the American Board of Anesthesiology and has been recognized for his skills and talents by a number of institutions. He received the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award in 2001, and in 2015 was named a Top Anesthesiologist and Pain Management Specialist by The Leading Physicians of the World.
